Imbros Gorge from Rethymno: Is It Easier Than Samaria?

Updated October 18, 2026 · 5 min read

A rocky footpath narrowing between tall limestone walls in Imbros Gorge

Yes, Imbros is the easier choice for most walkers – but it is not an easy pavement stroll. The official Greek tourism site describes an approximately 8 km descent from Imbros village to Komitades, while the complete Samaria route to Agia Roumeli is about 16 km. The Imbros Gorge hike with transport from Rethymno lasts 10 hours, starts at €27 and is rated 4.5 from 509 reviews.

Shorter walk, still a full day

The hiking section is shorter than Samaria, yet pickup, the mountain road, waiting time and the south-coast stop make this a full excursion. The route descends over loose and uneven stone, passes through narrows where the walls come close together and finishes near Komitades. Shoes with grip matter more than speed.

The operator describes a swim and lunch near the Libyan Sea after the walk. Check the booking page for the current stop, what transport is included, whether food and the gorge admission are extra, and the exact pickup point. Weather and local access can change the programme.

Imbros versus Samaria

Choose Imbros if 16 km sounds too long, if you want a gorge without Samaria’s ferry-linked logistics, or if you prefer to retain energy for the coast. Choose Samaria for the bigger physical undertaking and national-park experience. “Easier” is comparative: Imbros still involves prolonged downhill walking and irregular footing.

It is a poor choice when anyone in the party has an unconfirmed mobility limitation, unsuitable footwear or doubts about a long descent. Ask the operator directly rather than treating a general description as an accessibility promise.

Guided trip or independent hike?

The organised day solves the awkward one-way route: the walk begins in Imbros and ends near Komitades. Independent hikers must arrange transport at both ends and check the current KTEL service. A car does not remove that problem unless a transfer or second driver is planned.

Our recommendation

We recommend the Imbros Gorge day trip from Rethymno to walkers who want a genuine Cretan gorge with roughly half Samaria’s route length. Pick Samaria when the long trek itself is the purpose of the day.
